Strategies for Effective Communication in the Classroom

Strategies for Effective Communication in the Classroom

Effective communication is the process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, opinions, knowledge, and data so that the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose. When we communicate effectively, both the sender and receiver feel satisfied.

Communication occurs in many forms, including verbal and non-verbal, written, visual, and listening. It can occur in person, on the internet (on forums, social media, and websites), over the phone (through apps, calls, and video), or by mail.

Communication is key in the classroom: successful teaching is generally considered to require only 50% knowledge to 50% communication skills. As a result, a teacher should be proficient in all four modes of communication – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – and should know how to utilise this proficiency effectively in a school environment. Being able to do this has been proven to impact the success students achieve in their academic lives, as well as the teacher’s own career success.

In this context, some strategies of effective communication are applied at the beggining of school year in classroom, by the teachers Dimitra Karadimou and Panos Kourtidis to strengthening the cooperative class climate.

Indicatevly, the following exercises were applied

Body Language Speaker

Instruct employees to perform a sequence of gestures, such as tapping their nose, standing up, bending one knee, sitting down again, crossing their hands, etc. Do eight to ten gestures while displaying them and giving instructions. On giving the final instruction, while telling employees what to do, perform a completely different action.

Magic Circle

The Magic Circle process has long been recognized as an effective and easy-to-use approach that helps children acquire cooperation, social, and language skills.

The group painting

Sitting together to paint is an ideal background for casual conversations in which we get to know one another. Whereas typical small talk can feel stiff since there is some form of pressure to “make” conversation, sitting next to each other in front of canvases removes that pressure. While painting on canvas it is completely natural to zoom in and out of conversations.
